Discover the world of colour in a way that starts from nature, traditional painting techniques and handcraft.

In this introductory workshop we get to know pigments from Estonian nature and explore how a natural material eventually becomes a paint you can paint with.

Making pigments from raw material is a long, multi-stage process, so in the workshop we use natural pigments that have already been prepared. On site we will also do a small demonstration of how a pigment is obtained from natural material and how real paint begins to be born from dry pigment.

What do we do in the workshop?

We get to know two different traditional binders.

With egg tempera we make a stronger, fuller paint and see how the pigment becomes more opaque and intense.

With gum arabic we make a more transparent, watercolour-like paint and try out how the balance of water, pigment and binder changes the character of the colour.

We also take a brief look at making a traditional gesso surface. We see how marble dust and a collagen-based binder are used to make a smooth, durable painting ground that is a real pleasure to paint on with natural pigments.

We paint ourselves

In the workshop we paint on high-quality watercolour paper , and each participant can make a small card or picture to take home.

You can come with your own idea or design, but six prepared templates are also available on site:

• a plant leaf;

• a flower;

• a plant with berries;

• mountains and the sun;

• a mushroom;

• a wreath.

That way you don’t have to worry about what to draw and can calmly focus on mixing colours, getting a feel for them and the process of painting.

Who is the workshop for?

The workshop suits anyone interested in:

• natural pigments and colours;

• traditional painting techniques;

• egg tempera and watercolour-like paints;

• more mindful, nature-inspired creativity;

• discovering new art techniques.

No previous painting experience is needed.

What matters most is curiosity, the joy of discovery and a wish to try with your own hands how real artists’ paint can be born from a material taken from nature.

It is an introduction to a bigger world

This is an introductory workshop where we focus above all on getting a feel for pigments, binders and different paints.

Later you can continue with follow-up workshops that go deeper into, for example, gesso painting, composition, planning and observation skills — how to learn to notice form, proportion and space more and more with an artist’s eye.
